I was looking for inspiration for a fun birthday cake, for my hubby, Alex, and it came to me with his Halloween costume this year. John Lennon. I usually do a super hero themed box cake, but not this year. I had to step it up and excuse the pun, think out of the box. This cheesecake is tie dyed and stenciled with John's iconic self portrait scribble. I was pleased with the visual and edible results and the birthday boy was right chuffed:)
The recipe is a standard New York cheesecake with rainbow effect. I used the recipe from Sprinkles for Breakfast.
For the stencil I brought up the image from Google and made it as large as I could on my screen in Photoshop. I then traced it on the screen with a soft tip marker that wouldn't bleed.
Then I used an Exacto knife to cut the inked parts out to create the delicate areas for the openings. Next I sprinkled cocoa powder over the stencil. I went over it again in confectioner's sugar to make the design pop. I removed the stencil and viola! A tribute to John and Alex in one cake.
